Back To Berry – Bushfire Recovery

We saw the glow of the flames during Black Saturday on the 7th February, 2009. Five years later, on February 9th, 2014, the property where I grew up and where my parent’s live burned in fires that spread over 22,900 hectares of land, destroyed over 20 homes and more than 2,000 kilometres of fencing, and killed more than 14,000 sheep and hundreds of cattle.

fire 4fire 8

In January, 2020 the world watched as the South East coast of Australia burned. The statistics are horrifying. 18.6 million hectares destroyed along with 2,779 homes, more than 30 people and an estimated one billion animals killed. The cost of dealing with the bush fires is expected to exceed the A$4.4 billion of the 2009 Black Saturday fires and tourism sector revenues have fallen more than A$1 billion. Every day people are hurting. Physically, emotionally and financially.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and insignificant. To ask yourself “What can I do to help?” The answer is relatively simple. Volunteer, donate, buy and visit. Tim and I have been on a small business online spending spree. We have purchased clothing, sauce and soap. We’ve booked accommodation for the holidays and tickets to attractions. We are making a small but significant difference.

Towns like Berry on the NSW South Coast have told us that they are well and truly open for business and visitors are invited to come back for a visit, and soon!

country road

We are no strangers to the area having visited the NSW South Coast in 2016 and loved it! You can read our blog HERE and we can’t wait to get #backtoberry and explore everything that Berry has to offer. It looks pretty spectacular.

Grain Silo

Berry is just over two hours from Sydney and Canberra (so flying in makes it really accessible if you are from interstate and don’t want to drive the entire way).

Moo

Steeped in history and the first truly rural town south of Sydney, Berry effortlessly combines breathtaking countryside with boutique shopping and cafes that have something for everyone.

street 1farmers markets

We love spending time outdoors and nature is at its finest in Berry no matter the season – in autumn the trees turn gold and amber, in winter the cool crisp air lures you to a welcoming fire, in spring the gardens are a feast for the senses and in summer it’s just ten minutes to spectacular Seven Mile Beach and the national park.

Beach Sunrise

Doesn’t it sound amazing? Communities across Australia like Berry need our support. They need us to visit. To buy from small businesses. To come back.

What are you waiting for? To find out more and plan your visit go to www.berry.org.au and follow @berrynsw on Instagram and Facebook.

Harry Potter Book Week Costumes, 2019

This post is sponsored by Spotlight Stores

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together by celebrating Book Week. If you have been following for a while you will know that we LOVE to dress up and Book Week is one of our favourite annual events.

Every year, we’ve headed into Spotlight to pick up supplies (yarn, pom poms, ready made costumes, face paint, ribbon – you name it, we’ve bought it!) and, no, they are not paying me to say this we are just happy customers*!

Spotlight is the exclusive costume partner of CBCA, so to get prepared we headed into our nearest Spotlight Store and there was no surprise that it was Harry Potter all the way for Alegría and Isaac!

Book week 2019 10.jpg

Harry Potter Costumes continue to dominate with the range expanding to various Hogwarts house items. This year the Invisibility Cloak is the big hitter, as well as new Quidditch team costume sets. We were also told by the team at Spotlight that “career” costumes such as Astronauts and Doctors were showing early signs of being popular due to this year’s theme of Reading is My Secret Power.

To get inspired for Book Week, head to your nearest Spotlight store to pick up your DIY or ready-to-wear CBCA Book Week costumes. There is something for everyone!

Girl Guides Australia’s Annual Biscuit Drive 2019

This post is sponsored by Girl Guides Australia

Alegria 4 (1)
When I was younger, I desperately wanted to join the Girl Guides. Friends of our family had children that had joined and always had such amazing stories about their adventures. I was so jealous, however due to living in a rural area, we didn’t have any associations close by so I had to live vicariously through my friends. Looking back, not only were my friends having fun, they were also learning business skills by selling biscuits to raise funds for their activities.

Alegria 4

Girl Guides Australia’s much-loved annual Biscuit Drive is taking place in May this year,
when thousands of girls will set up biscuit stalls to fundraise for their Guiding activities and we as a community can support them in any way we can.

Alegria 4 (1)

Having a daughter of my own, it makes me so happy that Girl Guides Australia exists to
foster our future leaders by giving girls a chance to fund programs and activities that
empower girls, develop leadership and valuable life skills, boost confidence, financial
literacy, awareness against body image stereotypes and gender-based violence to help girls reach their full potential in life.

Alegria 2

This year’s Girl Guides campaign is about “More Than A Biscuit”, it’s a celebration of the diversity, confidence, empowerment and friendship of Girl Guides, and is a chance to recognise the important role the broader community plays in supporting Girl Guides and their activities.

Alegria 1

This is where you and I come in.

If you would like to support the Girl Guides, please reach out to young girls in your
community. Girl Guides Biscuits can be purchased through your local Girl Guides Units and from State offices while stocks last.

Alegria 3

The range includes the flagship traditional vanilla biscuit, buttery shortbread (gluten-free), and the bite-sized mini chocolate chip biscuit with real chocolate.

Immunity Support with Sambucol

THIS POST IS SPONSORED BY SAMBUCOL

It’s quite ironic that as I sit down to write this post, my muscles are aching and I have a
barking cough. I was just commenting (read, gloating) last week that I managed to avoid the illness that plagued Tim, Alegria and Isaac on our trip to Malaysia and Singapore in January.

I couldn’t quite believe it actually, because generally it is me who gets sick and has the
terrible immune system and the others go about their lives without so much as a sniffle.

Well, I spoke too soon and now I have it!

Not great timing considering the kids are back to the “germ factory” that is school and I am up to my eyeballs with work for our newest venture, The Bush Bus.

This year, I have decided that I need to work on my immunity because it really is terrible. I had glandular fever as a teenager that had a real impact on me, I taught swimming to kids and was ALWAYS sick (I guess that comes with the territory when they cough in your face all the time), then I had a few good years before I had my own children so again I caught everything they did and often my symptoms were worse than theirs.

In September 2017, I got Influenza A. It was the year that over 100 people died from it and I remember reading about the mother who had her baby whilst affected and didn’t get to see her newborn for months. Thankfully she pulled through, many didn’t.

I have never felt so sick in my life. Now when people who have never had the flu say “I’m so sick, I have the flu” when it’s just a cold I want to shake them and scream “YOU HAVE NO IDEA”!!I was put into “quarantine”at our house and the kids weren’t allowed in my room without us all wearing a mask. They had to stay away from me so they could only come to the foot of the bed. There were no cuddles. Isaac was 4 and Alegria 7 and they couldn’t touch their mum. It was horrible to be asked every day “Mumma are you better? Can I have a snuggle?” and to have to answer “no”. My heart breaks for all those parents and kids out there that live this daily, we were lucky that it only lasted a few weeks.

thumbnail_IMG_3086

I don’t want to have another year of sickness for our family so I need to take some steps to improve everyone’s immune systems.

thumbnail_IMG_3090

Sambucol Kids Immunity Gummies are a great way to support your children’s immune
system all year round, with each bottle containing 50 tasty immune support gummies. Their formulation contains Elderberry, Vitamin C and Zinc which can help support the immune system and provide antioxidants to reduce free radicals formed in the body. Please note, it can’t be used for children with asthma or allergies due to the bee products also contained in the gummies (be mindful of this, I know I need to be as Alegria has asthma).

thumbnail_IMG_3077

Whenever I talk about products such as these, I need to put a legal notice in. Please ALWAYS READ THE LABEL; FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE; IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST, TALK TO YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL; THIS MEDICINE MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU. READ THE LABEL BEFORE PURCHASE.

thumbnail_IMG_3074

I’d love to read in the comments how you supported your family’s immune systems. Was it a change in diet or more sleep? Did you use essential oils or try supplements? Have you used Sambucol before? Would you recommend them?

I wish you good health in 2019! – Georgina

Travelling with Pets – Our 5 Top Tips! Win a Years Supply of Bravecto!

Sponsored by Bravecto®

If you are like us, you are becoming so busy with end of year parties, school commitments, planning for Christmas and organising a much-needed break for your family that you could easily forget protecting your furry family members!

I’d like to take a moment to remind you to think about protecting your dog from paralysis ticks and fleas especially as you may be travelling with your beloved pooch.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To help you, we have put together our top 5 tips for travelling with your pets:

  1. PROTECT YOUR PET – Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date, that they are fully wormed (including heartworm) and have been treated with Bravecto® for protection from paralysis ticks and fleas.

TIP #1: Make sure you take a copy of their vaccination certificates with you, vet notes if your dog has a medical condition and prescriptions / medication for the length of the trip.

  1. FOOD FOR THOUGHT – Dogs like familiarity so take an adequate supply of their regular food to reduce the risk of stress. We always take Duke’s food bowl although I am sure he’d eat out of any bowl without a problem!

TIP #2: Limit food before long trips – you don’t want spew in your car!

  1. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME – Make sure your pet is microchipped and your details are current so that your dog can be returned to you if they get lost.

TIP #3: We always write our number on the inside of Duke’s collar as well as having a name tag just in case the tag falls off.

  1. HOME IS WHERE YOU LAY YOUR HEAD – Take your dog’s bedding with you. They are always more comfortable in their own beds with familiar smells and it gives them a ‘safe’ place to go to when they want some alone time.
  1. LEAD THE WAY – Don’t forget your dog’s lead and a longer rope for when you are at camp if you think your dog will wander off.

TIP #4: Pack an old tent peg and a hammer to secure your rope.

Australia’s paralysis tick season runs from about September to March – the time when adult female ticks are most abundant, although this can vary region to region.

Duke the cocker spaniel

It’s because of this that Australia’s leading emergency veterinarians have an urgent warning message for dog owners – they want you to protect your dog against paralysis ticks or be prepared for the consequences.

Director and Veterinary Specialist at The Animal Emergency Service in Queensland, Dr Rob Webster said “Tick paralysis is a preventable disease. When we lose dogs, a terrible outcome for all involved, we are losing dogs that could have been saved by administering a long-lasting paralysis tick treatment. Once the paralysis from a tick bite has taken hold, even the very best we can do using tick anti-serum and supportive care is going to save 8 out of 10 patients. This leaves a large number of dog owners in the dreadful position where they essentially watch their dog die from a preventable disease.”

As you know, we use Bravecto® (which is the only oral chew to deliver 3 months flea and 4 months paralysis tick protection for dogs in a single dose) for our Duke. If you want to read more about Bravecto® or see Duke demonstrating how easy it is to administer, click HERE!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We want your dog to be protected too, and since it’s the season of giving, we are giving 5 lucky readers the chance to win a year’s Bravecto® (4 packs per winner)!

NitWits – All-In-One Head Lice Treatment Information and Giveaway

This post is sponsored by NitWits

If you are like us, your head will start itching at the mere mention of head lice, but with Term 2 well and truly underway, we thought it was time to take some notes from Nadine Ismiel-Nash, the mum and scientist who created Australia’s #1 Head Lice product, NitWits All-In-One Head Lice Treatment*.

nitwits-head-lice-logo-grey

The truth is, head lice can be picked up anywhere – including at school or when you’re away on holiday. I don’t know about you, but I have better things to do than spend hours tackling a head lice infestation!

Nadine is urging Australian parents to remember that early detection and treatment of head lice will minimise the spread. “For any child in school, including preschool and high school, weekly head lice checks are a MUST. Don’t forget to do a good check behind the ears and at the base of the neck. Minimising the spread of head lice is easier and more pleasant for kids and parents, and a good routine will make it much less likely that your child will be affected”, she says.

Nitwits.jpg

I am all for prevention when it comes to head lice, and was interested to read that securing long hair in a bun or a plait will minimise ’hair-to-hair’ contact along with applying a repellent like the NitWits Anti-Lice & Detangling Spray, which can deter and defend against head lice. For us, this will be easy to implement as Alegría’s school has a policy that states that all hair is to be tied back. No more pony tails, we are going to rock the plait and spray the NitWits Anti-Lice & Detangling Spray daily!

WHAT CAN I DO IF MY CHILD IS INFESTED WITH HEAD LICE? There are four types of head lice treatments available in Australia which work in different ways, and knowing what these treatments do and what is most suitable for your child is important.

The first is chemically-acting treatments, but I would rather try other options. I’m all for a hard-lined approach, but if there are other options that work then I would prefer to use them instead!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is where NitWits comes in! NitWits offers three different types of treatments:

1. Physically-acting treatments which work differently to chemically-acting treatments through a non-poisonous method to kill head lice and eggs by either stripping away their waxy coating causing them to dehydrate, or blocking the opening to their air ways, disrupting their ability to manage water. This physical mode of action means there is theoretically no chance for the lice to build up a resistance, unlike other traditional pesticide-based alternatives. With NitWits All-In-One Head Lice Treatment, there is no need for rigorous combing or to repeat the treatment, unlike many other alternatives. Importantly, the entire NitWits range is pyrethroid-free.

2. Wet combing which involves a combing solution and lice comb to comb out head lice and eggs;

3. Natural treatments that use natural actives such as tea tree and eucalyptus oils to treat lice by entering the louse’s central nervous system, paralysing and killing the lice.

Remember, to minimise the likelihood of head lice returning, you need to ensure everyone around your child has the all-clear too! “It’s incredibly important for you to communicate with your child’s school if head lice are discovered in your child’s hair. Also, inform friends and family so they can check for head lice as well. This is the only way all potential sources of infestation can be eliminated,” adds Nadine.

Because we know you have better things to do than worry about head lice, we spoke with the good people at NitWits and they have generously given us three packs of NitWits All-In-One Head Lice Treatment to give away! Happy days!

Alka Power – 3 Day Alkaline Cleanse

This post is sponsored by Alka Power

I was introduced to Alka Power late last year and was interested to try an alkaline water to see if I could tell the difference between it and normal tap water.alka-power-bottles-new

Alka Power is the first natural ionic mineral alkaline water with the highest, stable pH level of 9->10 (most alkaline waters in the Australian market are a pH of 7 to 8.2 at the source and have an unstable pH). Alka Power is Australian made and owned and has more than 10 active ionic minerals, which is nearly 100 times more alkaline and more efficient in hydrating and absorption than any other.

In the interests of full disclosure, I didn’t physically check the pH level myself so I can only go by what the Alka Power company say in regards to the pH level of their brand.

I have been reading about the benefits of an alkaline diet and have read that as a result of the acidic foods and drinks that we consume and the loss of electrolytes through daily activity our bodies are constantly being challenged to remain balanced, perform effectively and stay hydrated. This is why I was interested to see how I would feel after trialling the diet for 3 days and drinking Alka Power water to support the pH levels in my body.

3 Day Alkaline Cleanse

I set myself the challenge and took to Instagram and Facebook to hold myself accountable and to share my feelings. We have an amazing community of followers who were with me every step of the way and gave me encouragement and advice when I was detoxing from my regular diet.

End of DAY 1 thoughts:

I wasn’t really prepared to start the cleanse today (I decided today was the day on a whim!) so had to do a massive shop to get food to eat! I was really hungry all day but had a good dinner so am feeling much better.

No headaches or sick feelings but the kids annoyed me! Not sure if it was due to them just being annoying or me having a lesser tolerance! All in all an alright day, I’m trying to drink 1.5L per day but that’s hard!

End of DAY 2 thoughts:

So, today started out well with a delicious smoothie and salads for lunch.

But, I have a huge headache now and don’t really feel like dinner. It was a HOT day today and I don’t think I drank enough because I don’t feel good!

Maybe my body is detoxing with no sugar etc. I’m not sure but this isn’t fun.

End of DAY 3 thoughts:

At around 9 this morning my headache finally went away (I did have some panadol because I was miserable) and then I was just drained. Just incredibly tired all day.

My blood sugar plummeted mid afternoon and I was feeling really unwell so I had two pieces of toast with Vegemite and felt so much better. Back to normal.

I just thought, what am I doing? I’m hungry. I don’t feel good. Why? I chose not to have any sugar and I will continue with that and to try and be aware of my choices and not have huge amounts of processed foods. I have liked drinking the Alka Power water and will keep you updated on my progress!

OVERALL THOUGHTS

I think that overall I went really well and I enjoyed drinking the Alka Water. The Alka Power water was easy to drink and tastes good (it does taste different to tap water, but I like it!). I didn’t drink enough on the second day of the cleanse and I paid the price so have been trying to drink a 1.5L bottle per day! I have continued to eliminate any sugar in my diet but have had limited bread and dairy. I have been battling with a head cold / cough / hayfever recently so I can’t comment on my energy levels since finishing the cleanse but I am sure that I have to be feeling better with all the whole foods I have been eating and the water I have been drinking.

alka-power

Want to try Alka Power?

Alka Power comes in 600ml – $2.50 each and 1.5 litre bottle – $3.50 each and is stocked in over 800 Woolworth’s supermarkets nationwide as well as Harris Farm Markets, Thomas Dux Grocers, Vitamin king, QE Food Stores, About Life and Go Vita stores. A full stock list is available here.

We are giving away 12 x 600ml bottles to one of our readers so that you can try it yourself! If you would like to win, please email georgina@kiddingaroundaustralia.com and tell us why you would like to win!

PeriCoach Review – Kidding Around Essentials

This post is sponsored by PeriCoach

We have spoken about PeriCoach before on the blog and each time we discuss pelvic floor health we have an overwhelming response from women reaching out and talking about this very important issue.

I’m always a little nervous bringing up the subject because this is predominantly a travel, parenting and lifestyle blog but what I have come to learn is that if women are constantly worried about their weak pelvic floor, then they are not going to enjoy Kidding Around with their family.

And we can’t have that.

I’m actually very lucky and have pretty good pelvic floor muscles even though I never do any exercises to maintain them. I know many of you are not as fortunate, which makes me embarrassed that I am taking my health for granted when things can (and do) change over time.

The thing is we all know that we should be doing our pelvic floor exercises but how many of us actually do them as often as we should and in the correct way?

This is why I am interested in the PeriCoach system. It’s like having a personal trainer for your pelvic floor, providing feedback on your session and motivation to get those exercises done (it will even give you a reminder if you forget)!

The PeriCoach system is not a gimmick. It’s an Australian medical device – developed with support from a clinical advisory board of specialists in urogynaecology, gynaecology and pelvic physiotherapy and is manufactured in Australia. It has attracted a lot of interest from clinicians who work with patients with weak pelvic floor muscles or sexual dysfunction.

_20161116_163438

The actual PeriCoach device contains sensors that (after being calibrated to your body) measure the strength of your pelvic floor contractions. It then connects via bluetooth to an Apple or Android app on your phone. This data helps you to keep track of your progress and if you need help or advice, you can share your “workouts” with a healthcare professional that is registered and working with PeriCoach.

If you need to work in conjunction with a healthcare professional you can use the Find a Clinician page on the PeriCoach website to help you locate a health professional who has tested and is recommending the device. You will definitely find someone near you – I was surprised at how many professionals there are! Or you might like to do what I did and get your system online and start working out immediately.

The sessions themselves are short (just two minutes) and you start at the beginner level and work your way up from there. The exercises are easy, the app will tell you when to squeeze and when to relax and you can do it lying down or standing up. I’ve been using it for just over a month and my muscles are stronger!

_20161116_163518

So, if you are like me and you have been avoiding starting a pelvic floor exercise routine, then the time to take your health seriously is now!

MORE INFORMATION

The PeriCoach is $229 at the moment which is a saving of more than 20% off RRP! PLUS if you use our discount code you will save another 10%!

Our discount code for you to receive 10% off is KAAPC16

The PeriCoach is available online or through your pelvic health specialist. Once you’ve purchased the device, you can download the smartphone app and set up your device. For more discussion about PeriCoach, head to the PeriCoach Facebook page.

Competition Time! WIN with Bravecto® and protect your dog from paralysis ticks and fleas!

This post is sponsored by Bravecto

Picture this.

We were on our way to an appointment at our local vet for a check-up, vaccination and some holiday advice for Duke (our dog) and Ginger (our cat). Duke, who is always the best behaved in our family, is sitting nicely in the back seat between Alegría and Isaac and (of course) I couldn’t find the cat carrier so I have Ginger sitting on my lap whilst Tim is driving. It’s not ideal, I know!

Ah, the things we do for our furry family members! Our annual trip to the vet must mean one thing. It’s a time when I’d like to remind you to think about protecting your dog from paralysis ticks and fleas.

Media veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren has issued a strong warning to Aussie dog owners – protect your dog against paralysis ticks or be prepared for the consequences. Dr Katrina has seen the devastating effects of paralysis ticks first hand and is appealing to all dog owners to proactively talk to a local vet about paralysis ticks now, to avoid heartache later.

Australia’s paralysis tick season runs from about September to March – the time when adult female ticks are most abundant, although this can vary region to region. In order to protect Duke, we use Bravecto® which is the only oral chew to deliver 3 months flea and 4 months paralysis tick protection for dogs in a single dose. If you want to read more about Bravecto® or see Duke demonstrating how easy it is to administer, click HERE!

We want your dog to be protected too, so that’s why we are giving away 20 packs of Bravecto®! Yes, that’s right, 20 packs for 20 winners!
