The 2019 Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS) will bring together 3000 young performers from more than 200 government schools across Victoria, for two shows on Saturday 14 September at Melbourne Arena. Students dedicate many hours across many months preparing for the three-hour, live Spectacular. This opportunity of a lifetime gives them the chance to perform to an audience of around 12,000 people at Melbourne Arena and a TV audience later in the year on Network Seven.

The theme for this year’s Spectacular is ‘Made of Stars’. With a talented 80-piece orchestra and some of the best vocalists and dancers from Victorian state schools, the show will feature a galaxy of out-of-this-world performances from a top musical line-up of songs from artists including, Justin Timberlake and Madonna, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Daft Punk, Blur, Bruno Mars and Rhianna to Imagine Dragons, Stevie Wonder, Yothu Yindi, Sheppard, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton.

Expect to see athleticism at its finest when for the first time the Spectacular meets the X Games at Melbourne Arena with dare-devil BMX riders, skaters and scooter riders. And the audience will get a front row seat at a fashion parade inspired dance featuring glitterati – a fun take on a tongue-in-cheek look at the world of fashion featuring dancers dressed as paparazzi and multiple Anna Wintour’s all trying to get on to the red carpet to be seen by the TV cameras!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical

Charlie
We were lucky enough have golden tickets for the opening night of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne! Isaac was thrilled when “Charlie” announced at the beginning of the performance that “here you can eat as much candy as you like!”
charlie
Following a hugely successful six month season at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, this spectacular musical is full of your favourite songs from the original 1971 film, including “Pure Imagination”, “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket”, coupled with a brand new toe-tapping musical score.
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Melbourne 2
True to the original story, the show follows Charlie Bucket, played by Melbourne’s talented child actors Benjamin Belsey (10), Elijah Slavinskis (10), Edgar Stirling (10), Lenny Thomas (12) and Lachlan Young (13), who lives with his mother and four bed-ridden grandparents in a tiny ramshackle house. Grandpa Joe, played by the amazing Tony Sheldon, keeps the magic alive as Charlie dreams of his yearly birthday treat, a single bar of Wonka’s Whipple Scrumptious Marshmallow Delight, as Mr Willy Wonka played by the charismatic Paul Slade Smith conducts a worldwide search for five lucky children to win Golden tickets for a tour of his factory and a chance to win a lifetime supply of chocolate!
“Come with me, and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination!”
Whilst the first half of the show sets up the visit to Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, the second half is where the magic happens! Get ready for the Oompa-Loompas, incredible inventions, the great glass elevator and special effects that will have young and old captivated!
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Melbourne
The show goes for 2 hours and 30 minutes (with a 20 minute interval) so if you have little ones I’d suggest going to matinee performance. We were lucky that Isaac had a curriculum day the following day as we arrived home at midnight!
Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is sure to be loved during it’s Melbourne season so you should get your tickets to this everlasting showstopper before they head to Brisbane in March 2020!

Harry Potter Book Week Costumes, 2019

This post is sponsored by Spotlight Stores

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together by celebrating Book Week. If you have been following for a while you will know that we LOVE to dress up and Book Week is one of our favourite annual events.

Every year, we’ve headed into Spotlight to pick up supplies (yarn, pom poms, ready made costumes, face paint, ribbon – you name it, we’ve bought it!) and, no, they are not paying me to say this we are just happy customers*!

Spotlight is the exclusive costume partner of CBCA, so to get prepared we headed into our nearest Spotlight Store and there was no surprise that it was Harry Potter all the way for Alegría and Isaac!

Harry Potter Costumes continue to dominate with the range expanding to various Hogwarts house items. This year the Invisibility Cloak is the big hitter, as well as new Quidditch team costume sets. We were also told by the team at Spotlight that “career” costumes such as Astronauts and Doctors were showing early signs of being popular due to this year’s theme of Reading is My Secret Power.

To get inspired for Book Week, head to your nearest Spotlight store to pick up your DIY or ready-to-wear CBCA Book Week costumes. There is something for everyone!
