We absolutely LOVE these shows, so much so, that they have become a tradition for the Kidding Around Australia family!

wind-in-the-willows

I can’t tell you how much we LOVE the Australian Shakespeare Company’s Wind in the Willows! This is a must do for the school holidays! For over 90 minutes, you will be entertained by all of the classic characters – Mr. Toad, Ratty, Weasel, Mole, Badger, Otter, Portly, Polly and the Head Chief Rabbit at the Royal Botanic Gardens as you watch them bring to life Kenneth Grahame’s famous tale about life on the riverbank.  The children (and let’s face it, most parents) are transformed into rabbits by the Head Chief Rabbit with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose and have a wonderful outdoor adventure!

If you would like to see what we thought or our top tips for the show, then click HERE and HERE!

alice-in-wonderland-image-2.jpg

Alice in Wonderland comes to life in the beautiful surrounds of Rippon Lea House and Gardens this Summer holidays, and all the crazy characters will be there! You can join Alice as she goes down the rabbit hole and follows the White Rabbit into the entertaining
and magical world of Wonderland. She’ll get taller and smaller, dance with the Dodo, talk with a Caterpillar, sneeze with the Duchess, have tea with the Mad Hatter, and keep her head from the Queen of Hearts.

This captivating promenade-style children’s production will keep your whole family enthralled and delighted. With acrobatics, singing, dancing, and riddles and rhymes, there’s lots of fun participation for the kids. Even the adults have to turn into cards and march behind the Queen of Hearts – or it’s off with their heads!

tinkerbell-and-the-dream-fairies-2017-full-cast-4

Children aged between 3-8 will love to follow Tinkerbell and her friends the Dream Fairies, from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, as she searches for her wings at the Athenaeum Theatre 2, in Melbourne’s CBD.

Together with Tinkerbell, the cheeky Mustardseed (who entices the most laughter from the young audience), fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb, sweet Peasblossom and little Dewdropcreate a flurry of fun and encourage all of the little fairies and elves to help them as they sing, dance and do some pretty impressive acrobatics before heading off on a special adventure to ‘Bubble Land’.

Portable North Pole 2017 and Magic Pass Giveaway

Have you heard of the Portable North Pole 2017? Its a fun website and app that lets you create highly personalized video and phone messages that are delivered directly from Santa in just a few minutes to be viewed (or heard) on the web, your smartphone or tablet.

1_HP_2017-2_Logo

The video and calls are personalised so that Santa greets children by name (or nickname if your child has a unique name) and shows their picture. Alegria and Isaac were in shock at first, and then loved it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

“Mum, can we watch it again!!!!!!” “Do you think Santa will send us another message?” “How does Santa know my nickname?” (The answer to that one was … He sees you when you’re sleeping …)

Alegria had to watch the video 3 times, to let it all sink in! She couldn’t believe that Santa knew she was 7 years old and in school. She is very happy to know that Santa has picked out some great presents for her!

PNP Video 5.jpg

Isaac is super excited that he is currently on the nice list and on track for some special presents from Santa. He loved seeing how the big book worked and is happy with the photo choice that Santa has included! Apparently, he really LOVES those shoes!!

If you would like to see Isaac’s video, head to our Facebook page!

HOW IT WORKS

By visiting www.portablenorthpole.com, I created personalised messages for both Alegria and Isaac. I had to use a nickname for Alegria and for Isaac had to change the pronunciation as it was the American pronunciation of eye-zik instead of eye-zac.

I then entered details such as name, age, class and uploaded a photograph. Depending on the video you choose, you can also add the gift your child is hoping for. It was quick and simple! I was then able to access it on my phone via the app ( I only let the kids in the special children’s area – which they think is fantastic) and download it in high definition onto my computer.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It is also via that app that the kids were able to add different filters to their photos and I was able to record them watching their videos.

PNP filter

Santa speaks in four different languages – English, French, Spanish and Italian and there are quite a few package options including free videos (which last for around a minute), options for groups so that kids, such as childcare and preschool groups, enjoy Santa’s greeting together and there are no limits – make as many as you want!

PACKAGES (AU$)

• FREE: 4 unique, customizable videos (Christmas videos for kids, grownups and groups, plus one for Birthdays)
• Single Premium Video ($4.49): Choose from among 6 Premium videos.
• Video Pass ($12.99): Unlimited Premium videos, Reaction Recorder (mobile app only), Christmas Eve and Birthday videos.
• Magic Pass ($17.99): Unlimited Premium videos and calls, Reaction Recorder (mobile apps only), HD video downloads and 5 weekly bedtime videos read by Santa leading up to the big day. Also includes Christmas Eve and Birthday videos.
• Upgrade from Video to Magic Pass ($5.99)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Another great aspect is that Portable North Pole donates 5% of all online sales proceeds to children’s hospitals around the world. Since 2012, PNP has donated over $300,000.

Travelling with Pets – Our 5 Top Tips! Win a Years Supply of Bravecto!

Sponsored by Bravecto®

If you are like us, you are becoming so busy with end of year parties, school commitments, planning for Christmas and organising a much-needed break for your family that you could easily forget protecting your furry family members!

I’d like to take a moment to remind you to think about protecting your dog from paralysis ticks and fleas especially as you may be travelling with your beloved pooch.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

To help you, we have put together our top 5 tips for travelling with your pets:

  1. PROTECT YOUR PET – Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date, that they are fully wormed (including heartworm) and have been treated with Bravecto® for protection from paralysis ticks and fleas.

TIP #1: Make sure you take a copy of their vaccination certificates with you, vet notes if your dog has a medical condition and prescriptions / medication for the length of the trip.

  1. FOOD FOR THOUGHT – Dogs like familiarity so take an adequate supply of their regular food to reduce the risk of stress. We always take Duke’s food bowl although I am sure he’d eat out of any bowl without a problem!

TIP #2: Limit food before long trips – you don’t want spew in your car!

  1. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME – Make sure your pet is microchipped and your details are current so that your dog can be returned to you if they get lost.

TIP #3: We always write our number on the inside of Duke’s collar as well as having a name tag just in case the tag falls off.

  1. HOME IS WHERE YOU LAY YOUR HEAD – Take your dog’s bedding with you. They are always more comfortable in their own beds with familiar smells and it gives them a ‘safe’ place to go to when they want some alone time.
  1. LEAD THE WAY – Don’t forget your dog’s lead and a longer rope for when you are at camp if you think your dog will wander off.

TIP #4: Pack an old tent peg and a hammer to secure your rope.

Australia’s paralysis tick season runs from about September to March – the time when adult female ticks are most abundant, although this can vary region to region.

Duke the cocker spaniel

It’s because of this that Australia’s leading emergency veterinarians have an urgent warning message for dog owners – they want you to protect your dog against paralysis ticks or be prepared for the consequences.

Director and Veterinary Specialist at The Animal Emergency Service in Queensland, Dr Rob Webster said “Tick paralysis is a preventable disease. When we lose dogs, a terrible outcome for all involved, we are losing dogs that could have been saved by administering a long-lasting paralysis tick treatment. Once the paralysis from a tick bite has taken hold, even the very best we can do using tick anti-serum and supportive care is going to save 8 out of 10 patients. This leaves a large number of dog owners in the dreadful position where they essentially watch their dog die from a preventable disease.”

As you know, we use Bravecto® (which is the only oral chew to deliver 3 months flea and 4 months paralysis tick protection for dogs in a single dose) for our Duke. If you want to read more about Bravecto® or see Duke demonstrating how easy it is to administer, click HERE!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We want your dog to be protected too, and since it’s the season of giving, we are giving 5 lucky readers the chance to win a year’s Bravecto® (4 packs per winner)!

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO WIN?

JORD Wood Watch Review and Sale

Well, would you look what has arrived for me and to celebrate I have a special DISCOUNT code for you!

JORD CORA WATCH

It’s no secret that I am an admirer of JORD Wood Watches, especially after we gave one to Tim for Father’s Day. So, you can imagine how I thought all my Christmases had come at once when their signature wooden box appeared at my door!

Speaking of Christmas (what a smooth segue that was!), have you done your shopping yet? I prefer to pick up bits and pieces throughout the year and then finish it off in November and early December so that I don’t get stressed! I find the crowds too overwhelming and I hate trying to find a car park. I think I am looking in good shape this year … only one or two for the kids and I am done! Phew!

Quite a few of our readers have written to us (thank you for taking the time, I really appreciate it) and asked us if how we are finding Tim’s Koa and Black Dover series watch and I can tell you it hasn’t missed a beat. My watch is the Koa and Rose Gold Cora series  and so far I love it as well!

JORD CORA WATCH

If you or your partner have taken a shine to any of the watches in the Woman’s or Men’s shop then this is the time buy as JORD are having an amazing SALE for Black Friday (the American equivalent to our Boxing Day Sales) and we have a code for you!

SPECIAL DISCOUNT CODE

You can get an amazing $100 USD off your purchase by clicking HERE. But this sale is limited! Don’t worry if your watch isn’t available in this sale, simply click HERE for 25% off.

JORD CORA WATCH

Your watch will come beautifully packed in a cedar box with oil, cloth, extra links, and warranty card. The box (and selected watches) can even be personalised with custom engraving for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations or any other occasion you can think of!

Each JORD wooden watch is crafted out of a range of beautiful sustainable woods and sapphire crystal glass instead of actual glass (crystal glass is one of the most scratch resistant materials on earth) which is perfect for living life outdoors! A quick look at the JORD website will show you each unique watch has different textures, colours and grains along with different internal movements. We love the skeleton watches, such as the Dover and Cora because you can actually see them working away. Oh, and you don’t even have to worry about winding your watch or flat batteries as JORD watches are self-winding watches.

Each of JORD’s wood watches have a one year warranty, but they have two rules! If you got all crazy with your watch and it got damaged they appreciate your honesty and will charge you a small fee. If there was a defect in their workmanship, they will put their heads down in shame and repair the watch free of charge. I like this.

JORD CORA WATCH

I can honestly say that JORD watches make a unique and distinctive gift – so don’t miss out on this discount code! JORD have free worldwide shipping so you won’t need to worry about facing the crowds – balm to my soul!

Please feel free to share this with your friends! This code is accepted worldwide!

Happy Shopping!

Bedhead Hats – Buy one and give one someone in need for free!

Spring has sprung and if you are anything like us, you will be heading outside more and more – yay!

BEDHEADS HATS

We are extremely sun smart in the Kidding Around Australia house as both sides of our
family have had skin cancers removed, including me (Georgina). Australia has one of the
highest rates of skin cancer in the world and not everyone realises that sun exposure in the first 10 years of life plays a large part in determining your lifetime potential for skin cancer.

BEDHEADS HATS

It’s for this reason that we are thrilled to be collaborating with Bedhead Hats who are
committed to helping parents instil sun safety habits in children by using the most
comfortable, high quality protective hat solutions on the market. All Bedhead Hats have UPF 50+ Excellent Protection rating, are made with resilient stretch cotton that grows with the child, the brim stays firm out of the child’s eye line and they are made to suit the hot Australian climate.

BEDHEADS HATS

When Alegría tried on her hat, the first thing she commented on was that it didn’t flop in her face! It’s true. I’m not sure what they use, but it is not floppy! Alegría said that is super comfy and she loves it! Isaac loved the different designs and ultimately went with an outdoors inspired design which is perfect for our new Raising Nature Lovers School Holiday Program.

The head behind Bedhead Hats is 35-year- old mum of one, Richelle Ellis. Having a very out-doorsy newborn boy, Richelle desperately searched for a baby-friendly hat that provided optimum sun protection. All Richelle found was heavy, hot canvases, clashing prints and floppy brims that were either too big or uncomfortable for her baby. So, in 2011, Richelle launched Bedhead Hats to fill this gap in the market and deliver hats that were not only tested on the UPF protection of fabric, but also the size and angle of brim – while being cleverly designed to stay on small heads!

BEDHEADS HATS

Richelle is not only a talented business woman, she is also passionate about philanthropic purpose. Richelle has started a new community initiative ‘Protect the Potential’ that will see Bedhead Hats give away $100,000 worth of hats to newborns in Australia including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

That’s something that we all should get involved with! From the 15th September 2017, for each order placed online at www.bedheadhats.com.au, a newborn hat will be gifted or donated. Customers have the choice to gift the hat to someone they know in need or donate to charity aiding disadvantaged mothers and babies (such as St Kilda Mums and Baby Give Back) simply by purchasing any product and selecting ‘GIFT’ or ‘DONATE’ at the cart screen to pass one on to a child in need. Amazing.

BEDHEADS HATS

Bedhead Hats are pram and baby carrier friendly; soft around the neck, while providing sun and glare protection. RRP $26.95 – $34.95.

JORD Wood Watch Review and Competition

I have been admiring JORD Wood Watches for a few years now and had coveted a women’s wooden watch to call my own. I love that they are handcrafted and use range of raw materials as well as the feeling of ‘wilderness wanderlust’ I get as soon as one of their images pops up in my Instagram feed.

JORD DOVER WATCH

I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to collaborate with JORD as they are a brand that I already had an emotional connection with – even though I was not yet a direct consumer. They say it is always a matter of timing and when the email came through about 10 days before Father’s Day a little thought crept into my head. I scanned the list of women’s watches in the Woman’s shop and picked my favourite. Curiosity got the better of me, so I had a look through the men’s wooden watch range as well. I kept coming back to a watch that I knew that Tim would absolutely love, but what about MY watch? I really, really want one! But the thing is, Tim is hard to buy for. I’ve lost count of the number of DVD’s and framed photos he has received as gifts, and apart from sending him skydiving for his 40th birthday, my gifts to him could be described as a bit hit and miss. Well, NOT THIS TIME!

With a spring in my fingertips, I ordered Tim a Koa and Black Dover series watch from the Men’s shop and eagerly waited for it to arrive from America. It arrived and like an excited child, I presented it to Tim! He was amazed and promptly announced that this was the third best present he has ever received (after Alegría and Isaac!). He was so excited that I didn’t have the heart to point out that they weren’t actually presents!

JORD DOVER WATCH

Opening a JORD watch is an event in itself. The watch comes beautifully packed in a cedar box with oil, cloth, extra links, and warranty card. The box (and selected watches) can even be personalised with custom engraving for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations or just a declaration of love.

JORD DOVER WATCH

Each JORD wooden watch is crafted out of a range of beautiful sustainable woods and sapphire crystal glass instead of actual glass (crystal glass is one of the most scratch resistant materials on earth) which is perfect for living life outdoors! A quick look at the JORD website will show you each unique watch has different textures, colours and grains along with different internal movements. We love the skeleton watches, such as the Dover, because you can actually see them working away. You know, keeping time. Oh, and you don’t even have to worry about winding your watch or flat batteries as JORD watches are self-winding watches. It truly is fascinating!

JORD DOVER WATCH

Each of JORD’s wood watches has a one year warranty, but they have two rules! If you got all crazy with your watch and it got damaged they appreciate your honesty and will charge you a small fee. If there was a defect in their workmanship, they will put their heads down in shame and repair the watch free of charge. I like this.

JORD DOVER WATCH

I can honestly say that JORD watches make a unique and distinctive gift, but it’s not just the adults that love this watch. Isaac is so enthralled with Dadda’s new wood watch he has put his order in! One day, little man. One day.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

If you love this watch as much as we do, then you are going to want to enter our competition!

Monopoly Gamer Review

Monopoly Gamer 5.jpg

Hasbro has released various branded versions of classic board game Monopoly over the years but when we heard that Hasbro and Nintendo have teamed up to introduce the Super Mario-themed Monopoly Gamer we were excited to how different it would be.

The essence of Monopoly remains the same in Monopoly Gamer, which hit stores in August, with players rolling the dice to travel around the edge of the game board, buying and trading properties but with the added fun of completing levels, token-specific abilities, coins replacing money, power-up dice and boss fights. Monopoly Gamer is next level Monopoly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For the first time in Monopoly history, each character token (Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach and Yoshi) has its own unique power-up ability, introducing another layer of strategy for new and old players alike. For example, landing on the Super Star board space will activate Princess Peach’s “Super Star” ability to collect rent from the bank, Mario rolls the game’s numbered die and collects that many coins from the bank, Yoshi collects all coins on the board, and Donkey Kong steals three coins from each player. Players can also activate a special Power-up boost by rolling the Power-up die.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When players land on or pass “Go”, they collect two coins and a boss battle begins. There are eight boss battle cards in the game, which players must fight in order. Players pay the amount of coins indicated on the card to initiate a fight and roll the die. If the number is the same or higher than that on the boss card, the player wins and the boss card goes into their inventory. The game ends when the final boss is defeated. Players tally up the points from the properties they own and the bosses they have defeated, along with 10 extra points for every five coins in their stash. The player with the highest score wins.

Does this make sense? If not, this might help:

With Alegría and Isaac being under 8, we had to make some concessions with the rules but they still had a great time and we have all chosen our favourite tokens!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Monopoly Gamer also have downloadable content locked down in the form of Power Packs (each sold separately), which include one of several Super Mario character tokens like Luigi, Boo, Rosalina, Wario, Diddy Kong and more. The power packs are available for RRP $5.99 each.

If you enjoy Monopoly and are looking for a fun addition to your weekly game night schedule, then Monopoly Gamer is a must!

Monopoly Gamer MainBoard

MORE INFORMATION

The standard Monopoly Gamer Edition game is available at major retailers for RRP $44.99, and is for ages 8 and up. There is also a Monopoly Gamer Collector’s Edition game available exclusively through EB Games (RRP $64.99), featuring premium packaging and a bonus Bowser token. The Monopoly Gamer Collector’s Edition game will also be available at additional online retailers later this year.

GO TOBOGGANING

Lake Mountain Tobogganing

Hire a toboggan or bring a plastic one from home (no inflatables allowed) and race each other down the Village Toboggan Run or Koala Creek Run! Don’t worry if there isn’t much snow on the mountain, there is guaranteed cover of man-made snow throughout the entire snow season on the Toboggan Runs.

STRAP ON SOME SKIS AT THE FISCHER NORDIC FUN PARK

Lake Mountain Cross Country Ski Lesson.jpg

The Fischer Nordic Fun Park is designed for kids aged 4 to 12 year old and is only for children participating in the group lessons. Each session runs for 30 minutes and is all about having fun whilst learning the basics of cross-country skiing.

Alegria and Isaac LOVED there lesson! Felix was their instructor and had them kangaroo hopping and delivering pizza in no time! They both can’t wait to try again next year.

Each 30 minute lesson costs $25 per child and includes ski equipment hire (skis & boots).

START SHREDDING AT THE BURTON RIGLET PARK

Tim was just about to burst seeing Alegria and Isaac carry their little snowboards into Burton Riglet Park. Burton began this program to get families riding together, and it couldn’t be more fun! More information on their programs can be found here

The snowboarding lessons are for kids aged 3 – 6 years (they have to be able to fit into the little boots) and let’s just say that both Alegria and Isaac take after their Dad! We see many days ahead on snowy mountain tops.

Each 30 minute lesson costs $25 per child and includes ski equipment hire (snowboard, boots and helmet). Kids are welcome to have back-to-back lessons or come back later in the day.

GET ADVENTUROUS

Lake Mountain Tube Ride

Be brave and go whizzing down the 240-meter Dual Flying Fox (which is not open when it is windy – so don’t promise this to the kids), slide down the Tube Run or join in a game of Laser Skirmish (minimum numbers apply)!

Tickets are available at the information booth on mountain on the day and cost $20 for 2 Rides (per person) on the Flying Fox, $10 for 3 Rides on the Tube Run and $15 for 45 minute session for Laser Skirmish.

BUILD A SNOWMAN AND HAVE A SNOWBALL FIGHT

Lake Mountain Snowman

You cannot go to the snow without building a snowman and throwing a few snowballs! Don’t forget to bring your own carrot for a nose!

GET CLOSER TO NATURE ON A WINTER WALK

Lake Mountain Boy on Tree.JPG

There are two walks that are appropriate for kids at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. The 600m return Leadbeaters Walk leaves from the SE corner of Gerraty’s car park. The 500m return Bjarne Dahl Memorial Walk is a wheelchair and pram accessible boardwalk at Snowy Hill car park. You can walk through the regenerating Alpine Ash forest and if there have been fresh snowfalls you can have heaps of fun playing in the snow!

OUR TOP TIPS

  • Hire all your gear on the mountain (everything can be hired except for gloves – they can be purchased from the gift shop).
  • Aim to arrive by 10am – at the latest. During busy periods the carpark closes and admit no more visitors onto the mountain. Can you imagine how you (and the kids) would feel if you drove for two hours and were turned away. Ahh!
  • All food and drinks are available at the onsite cafe – however there are undercover picnic tables so bring your own lunch! Make sure you pack some snacks and a drink bottle for the kids to enjoy during the day.
  • Adults can enjoy the many cross-country skiing trails – just buy a ski pass at the information centre on the mountain. Lessons and guided snowshoe tours are available for adults and children.
