Artvo, Melbourne.

I have to be honest, an art gallery is not somewhere that I take the kids often. Something about being quiet and not touching anything has me in a mild panic before we even get in the car!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, the time’s, they are a changing! The Artvo Immersive Gallery is the first art gallery of its kind in Australia and is located in Melbourne’s District Docklands precinct (formerly Harbor Town). Unlike other art galleries or museums, you can touch and interact with over 100 amazing large scale 3D artworks covering the walls and floors!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Artvo recruited 14 international artists with over 40 years of experience to complete the awe-inspiring paintings with works complete in just 60 days.

Artvo20

Now, I could go on and on about it but really, our photos do all the talking! I will say, that capturing photos on your smart phone is simple – we did take our “big” camera as well and to be honest, we got better photos on the phone. All you need to do is step onto the clearly marked photo point on the ground in front of each painting and follow the easy to read directions. There are TV screens showing you how to get the best results as well as the photo tips on the floor that tell you if you should be using a vertical or horizontal image capture, camera flash on or off and how to position yourself for a mind-bending picture result. There are also staff on hand to help you get the best image and to take family and group shots!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There are 11 themed galleries in 1900sqm, so let’s get to it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As you can see, Alegria absolutely loved hamming it up for the camera, and Isaac liked it for about an hour and then started to get antsy. On this basis, I’d say that you have a limited time frame for under 5’s whilst school aged kids will have a great time. Everyone loves seeing the results of the image they just took as it looks completely different on screen!

Alice in Wonderland – The Australian Shakespeare Company

Alice in Wonderland 1

As you know, we really enjoy the Australian Shakespeare Company‘s productions. We think they are a great way to introduce children to the world of live theatre! We had never seen the Australian Shakespeare Company’s version of Alice in wonderland (based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll’s classic story) so we knew we had to change that!

We grabbed our picnic blanket, our chairs and a picnic and headed off to Rippon Lea Estate (the gardens are amazing to explore after the show) and joined Alice as she follows the White Rabbit into the fun and magical world of Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland 4

Of course, the production is funny and there’s plenty of audience participation. We would expect nothing less of an Australian Shakespeare Company’s production! You can expect to see a hoard of little caterpillars are encouraged to crawl away as fast as they can before the Queen shouts “off with their heads” and they are all cheered on by a large deck of playing cards!

Alice in Wonderland 6.jpg

Top Tip: Don’t put your kids in clothes that you don’t want grass stains on the knees!

Alice in Wonderland 2

All of your favourite characters are there! Alice dances with the Dodo, is surprised by the Cheshire Cat, sings with Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, talks with a Caterpillar, sneezes with the Duchess, has tea with the Mad Hatter and keeps her head from the Queen of Hearts.

Alice in Wonderland 5

Photography during the performance is not allowed, but there are plenty of photo opportunities after the show.

Alice In Wonderland 3.jpg

Alice in Wonderland is a fun, fast-paced journey into fantasy and the kids will love it!

Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies – Australian Shakespeare Company

If you have been thinking about introducing your little ones to live theatre, then Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies by the Australian Shakespeare Company is the perfect introduction.

tinkerbell-and-the-dream-fairies-2017-full-cast-8

Returning from a sell-out season in London, the Tinkerbell and the Dream Fairies musical is being performed in Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre 2, and Geelong’s Botanic Gardens.

tinkerbell-image-3

The show has been moved indoors for the Melbourne season (the Melbourne weather was too unpredictable to ensure the comfort of your littlest theatre fans), which is great for children aged between 3 – 8 as they join Tinkerbell and her friends the Dream Fairies, from a Midsummer Night’s Dream, as she searches for her wings.

tinkerbell-image-2

Together with Tinkerbell, the cheeky Mustardseed (who entices the most laughter from young and old), fluttery Moth, daring Cobweb, sweet Peasblossom create a flurry of fun and encourage all of the little fairies and elves to help them as they sing, dance and do some pretty impressive acrobatics before heading off on a special adventure to ‘Bubble Land’.

tinkerbell-image-medium

Photography is prohibited during the performance, however if you remember to bring your camera you can get a photo with the cast after the show!

JORD Wood Watch Review and Sale

Well, would you look what has arrived for me and to celebrate I have a special DISCOUNT code for you!

JORD CORA WATCH

It’s no secret that I am an admirer of JORD Wood Watches, especially after we gave one to Tim for Father’s Day. So, you can imagine how I thought all my Christmases had come at once when their signature wooden box appeared at my door!

Speaking of Christmas (what a smooth segue that was!), have you done your shopping yet? I prefer to pick up bits and pieces throughout the year and then finish it off in November and early December so that I don’t get stressed! I find the crowds too overwhelming and I hate trying to find a car park. I think I am looking in good shape this year … only one or two for the kids and I am done! Phew!

Quite a few of our readers have written to us (thank you for taking the time, I really appreciate it) and asked us if how we are finding Tim’s Koa and Black Dover series watch and I can tell you it hasn’t missed a beat. My watch is the Koa and Rose Gold Cora series  and so far I love it as well!

JORD CORA WATCH

If you or your partner have taken a shine to any of the watches in the Woman’s or Men’s shop then this is the time buy as JORD are having an amazing SALE for Black Friday (the American equivalent to our Boxing Day Sales) and we have a code for you!

SPECIAL DISCOUNT CODE

You can get an amazing $100 USD off your purchase by clicking HERE. But this sale is limited! Don’t worry if your watch isn’t available in this sale, simply click HERE for 25% off.

JORD CORA WATCH

Your watch will come beautifully packed in a cedar box with oil, cloth, extra links, and warranty card. The box (and selected watches) can even be personalised with custom engraving for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations or any other occasion you can think of!

Each JORD wooden watch is crafted out of a range of beautiful sustainable woods and sapphire crystal glass instead of actual glass (crystal glass is one of the most scratch resistant materials on earth) which is perfect for living life outdoors! A quick look at the JORD website will show you each unique watch has different textures, colours and grains along with different internal movements. We love the skeleton watches, such as the Dover and Cora because you can actually see them working away. Oh, and you don’t even have to worry about winding your watch or flat batteries as JORD watches are self-winding watches.

Each of JORD’s wood watches have a one year warranty, but they have two rules! If you got all crazy with your watch and it got damaged they appreciate your honesty and will charge you a small fee. If there was a defect in their workmanship, they will put their heads down in shame and repair the watch free of charge. I like this.

JORD CORA WATCH

I can honestly say that JORD watches make a unique and distinctive gift – so don’t miss out on this discount code! JORD have free worldwide shipping so you won’t need to worry about facing the crowds – balm to my soul!

Please feel free to share this with your friends! This code is accepted worldwide!

Happy Shopping!

Bedhead Hats – Buy one and give one someone in need for free!

Spring has sprung and if you are anything like us, you will be heading outside more and more – yay!

BEDHEADS HATS

We are extremely sun smart in the Kidding Around Australia house as both sides of our
family have had skin cancers removed, including me (Georgina). Australia has one of the
highest rates of skin cancer in the world and not everyone realises that sun exposure in the first 10 years of life plays a large part in determining your lifetime potential for skin cancer.

BEDHEADS HATS

It’s for this reason that we are thrilled to be collaborating with Bedhead Hats who are
committed to helping parents instil sun safety habits in children by using the most
comfortable, high quality protective hat solutions on the market. All Bedhead Hats have UPF 50+ Excellent Protection rating, are made with resilient stretch cotton that grows with the child, the brim stays firm out of the child’s eye line and they are made to suit the hot Australian climate.

BEDHEADS HATS

When Alegría tried on her hat, the first thing she commented on was that it didn’t flop in her face! It’s true. I’m not sure what they use, but it is not floppy! Alegría said that is super comfy and she loves it! Isaac loved the different designs and ultimately went with an outdoors inspired design which is perfect for our new Raising Nature Lovers School Holiday Program.

The head behind Bedhead Hats is 35-year- old mum of one, Richelle Ellis. Having a very out-doorsy newborn boy, Richelle desperately searched for a baby-friendly hat that provided optimum sun protection. All Richelle found was heavy, hot canvases, clashing prints and floppy brims that were either too big or uncomfortable for her baby. So, in 2011, Richelle launched Bedhead Hats to fill this gap in the market and deliver hats that were not only tested on the UPF protection of fabric, but also the size and angle of brim – while being cleverly designed to stay on small heads!

BEDHEADS HATS

Richelle is not only a talented business woman, she is also passionate about philanthropic purpose. Richelle has started a new community initiative ‘Protect the Potential’ that will see Bedhead Hats give away $100,000 worth of hats to newborns in Australia including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

That’s something that we all should get involved with! From the 15th September 2017, for each order placed online at www.bedheadhats.com.au, a newborn hat will be gifted or donated. Customers have the choice to gift the hat to someone they know in need or donate to charity aiding disadvantaged mothers and babies (such as St Kilda Mums and Baby Give Back) simply by purchasing any product and selecting ‘GIFT’ or ‘DONATE’ at the cart screen to pass one on to a child in need. Amazing.

BEDHEADS HATS

Bedhead Hats are pram and baby carrier friendly; soft around the neck, while providing sun and glare protection. RRP $26.95 – $34.95.

JORD Wood Watch Review and Competition

I have been admiring JORD Wood Watches for a few years now and had coveted a women’s wooden watch to call my own. I love that they are handcrafted and use range of raw materials as well as the feeling of ‘wilderness wanderlust’ I get as soon as one of their images pops up in my Instagram feed.

JORD DOVER WATCH

I was absolutely thrilled to be asked to collaborate with JORD as they are a brand that I already had an emotional connection with – even though I was not yet a direct consumer. They say it is always a matter of timing and when the email came through about 10 days before Father’s Day a little thought crept into my head. I scanned the list of women’s watches in the Woman’s shop and picked my favourite. Curiosity got the better of me, so I had a look through the men’s wooden watch range as well. I kept coming back to a watch that I knew that Tim would absolutely love, but what about MY watch? I really, really want one! But the thing is, Tim is hard to buy for. I’ve lost count of the number of DVD’s and framed photos he has received as gifts, and apart from sending him skydiving for his 40th birthday, my gifts to him could be described as a bit hit and miss. Well, NOT THIS TIME!

With a spring in my fingertips, I ordered Tim a Koa and Black Dover series watch from the Men’s shop and eagerly waited for it to arrive from America. It arrived and like an excited child, I presented it to Tim! He was amazed and promptly announced that this was the third best present he has ever received (after Alegría and Isaac!). He was so excited that I didn’t have the heart to point out that they weren’t actually presents!

JORD DOVER WATCH

Opening a JORD watch is an event in itself. The watch comes beautifully packed in a cedar box with oil, cloth, extra links, and warranty card. The box (and selected watches) can even be personalised with custom engraving for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduations or just a declaration of love.

JORD DOVER WATCH

Each JORD wooden watch is crafted out of a range of beautiful sustainable woods and sapphire crystal glass instead of actual glass (crystal glass is one of the most scratch resistant materials on earth) which is perfect for living life outdoors! A quick look at the JORD website will show you each unique watch has different textures, colours and grains along with different internal movements. We love the skeleton watches, such as the Dover, because you can actually see them working away. You know, keeping time. Oh, and you don’t even have to worry about winding your watch or flat batteries as JORD watches are self-winding watches. It truly is fascinating!

JORD DOVER WATCH

Each of JORD’s wood watches has a one year warranty, but they have two rules! If you got all crazy with your watch and it got damaged they appreciate your honesty and will charge you a small fee. If there was a defect in their workmanship, they will put their heads down in shame and repair the watch free of charge. I like this.

JORD DOVER WATCH

I can honestly say that JORD watches make a unique and distinctive gift, but it’s not just the adults that love this watch. Isaac is so enthralled with Dadda’s new wood watch he has put his order in! One day, little man. One day.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

If you love this watch as much as we do, then you are going to want to enter our competition!

Every person who enters will have a chance to win a $100 gift code to use on the JORD site (You don’t have to choose the Dover – they have many amazing wood watches for men and women!). One lucky person will win, but everyone will receive a consolation code worth $25 once the contest ends!

To Enter: Simply click on this link and fill in your details here https://www.woodwatches.com/g/kiddingaroundaustralia

We would LOVE you to share this with your friends! This competition is open worldwide!

Competition ends: 01/10/2017 at 11:59pm and the winner will be emailed by JORD Wood Watches. All other entrants will receive their consolation code via email.

Good Luck!

Monopoly Gamer Review

Monopoly Gamer 5.jpg

Hasbro has released various branded versions of classic board game Monopoly over the years but when we heard that Hasbro and Nintendo have teamed up to introduce the Super Mario-themed Monopoly Gamer we were excited to how different it would be.

The essence of Monopoly remains the same in Monopoly Gamer, which hit stores in August, with players rolling the dice to travel around the edge of the game board, buying and trading properties but with the added fun of completing levels, token-specific abilities, coins replacing money, power-up dice and boss fights. Monopoly Gamer is next level Monopoly.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For the first time in Monopoly history, each character token (Mario, Donkey Kong, Princess Peach and Yoshi) has its own unique power-up ability, introducing another layer of strategy for new and old players alike. For example, landing on the Super Star board space will activate Princess Peach’s “Super Star” ability to collect rent from the bank, Mario rolls the game’s numbered die and collects that many coins from the bank, Yoshi collects all coins on the board, and Donkey Kong steals three coins from each player. Players can also activate a special Power-up boost by rolling the Power-up die.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When players land on or pass “Go”, they collect two coins and a boss battle begins. There are eight boss battle cards in the game, which players must fight in order. Players pay the amount of coins indicated on the card to initiate a fight and roll the die. If the number is the same or higher than that on the boss card, the player wins and the boss card goes into their inventory. The game ends when the final boss is defeated. Players tally up the points from the properties they own and the bosses they have defeated, along with 10 extra points for every five coins in their stash. The player with the highest score wins.

Does this make sense? If not, this might help:

With Alegría and Isaac being under 8, we had to make some concessions with the rules but they still had a great time and we have all chosen our favourite tokens!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Monopoly Gamer also have downloadable content locked down in the form of Power Packs (each sold separately), which include one of several Super Mario character tokens like Luigi, Boo, Rosalina, Wario, Diddy Kong and more. The power packs are available for RRP $5.99 each.

If you enjoy Monopoly and are looking for a fun addition to your weekly game night schedule, then Monopoly Gamer is a must!

Monopoly Gamer MainBoard

MORE INFORMATION

The standard Monopoly Gamer Edition game is available at major retailers for RRP $44.99, and is for ages 8 and up. There is also a Monopoly Gamer Collector’s Edition game available exclusively through EB Games (RRP $64.99), featuring premium packaging and a bonus Bowser token. The Monopoly Gamer Collector’s Edition game will also be available at additional online retailers later this year.

LAKE MOUNTAIN ALPINE RESORT – 6 MUST DO ACTIVITIES TO DO AT LAKE MOUNTAIN WITH KIDS

Every winter Lake Mountain Alpine Resort transforms into a snow-covered wonderland and the kids LOVE it!

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort in Victoria is about 2 hours drive from Melbourne through the Yarra ValleyHealesville and Marysville. It is an amazingly beautiful part of the world, that we are lucky to live so close to.

Lake Mountain Kidding Around Australia kids.jpg

As you all know by now, the Kidding Around Australia kids are nature loving daredevils so they loved experiencing all Lake Mountain Alpine Resort had to offer.

6 MUST DO THINGS TO DO WITH KIDS AT

LAKE MOUNTAIN ALPINE RESORT!

GO TOBOGGANING

Lake Mountain Tobogganing

Hire a toboggan or bring a plastic one from home (no inflatables allowed) and race each other down the Village Toboggan Run or Koala Creek Run! Don’t worry if there isn’t much snow on the mountain, there is guaranteed cover of man-made snow throughout the entire snow season on the Toboggan Runs.

STRAP ON SOME SKIS AT THE FISCHER NORDIC FUN PARK

Lake Mountain Cross Country Ski Lesson.jpg

The Fischer Nordic Fun Park is designed for kids aged 4 to 12 year old and is only for children participating in the group lessons. Each session runs for 30 minutes and is all about having fun whilst learning the basics of cross-country skiing.

Alegria and Isaac LOVED there lesson! Felix was their instructor and had them kangaroo hopping and delivering pizza in no time! They both can’t wait to try again next year.

Each 30 minute lesson costs $25 per child and includes ski equipment hire (skis & boots).

START SHREDDING AT THE BURTON RIGLET PARK

Lake Mountain Snowboarding.jpg

Tim was just about to burst seeing Alegria and Isaac carry their little snowboards into Burton Riglet Park. Burton began this program to get families riding together, and it couldn’t be more fun! More information on their programs can be found here

The snowboarding lessons are for kids aged 3 – 6 years (they have to be able to fit into the little boots) and let’s just say that both Alegria and Isaac take after their Dad! We see many days ahead on snowy mountain tops.

Each 30 minute lesson costs $25 per child and includes ski equipment hire (snowboard, boots and helmet). Kids are welcome to have back-to-back lessons or come back later in the day.

GET ADVENTUROUS

Lake Mountain Tube Ride

Be brave and go whizzing down the 240-meter Dual Flying Fox (which is not open when it is windy – so don’t promise this to the kids), slide down the Tube Run or join in a game of Laser Skirmish (minimum numbers apply)!

Tickets are available at the information booth on mountain on the day and cost $20 for 2 Rides (per person) on the Flying Fox, $10 for 3 Rides on the Tube Run and $15 for 45 minute session for Laser Skirmish.

BUILD A SNOWMAN AND HAVE A SNOWBALL FIGHT

Lake Mountain Snowman

You cannot go to the snow without building a snowman and throwing a few snowballs! Don’t forget to bring your own carrot for a nose!

GET CLOSER TO NATURE ON A WINTER WALK

Lake Mountain Boy on Tree.JPG

There are two walks that are appropriate for kids at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. The 600m return Leadbeaters Walk leaves from the SE corner of Gerraty’s car park. The 500m return Bjarne Dahl Memorial Walk is a wheelchair and pram accessible boardwalk at Snowy Hill car park. You can walk through the regenerating Alpine Ash forest and if there have been fresh snowfalls you can have heaps of fun playing in the snow!

Lake Mountain Family.jpg

OUR TOP TIPS

  • Hire all your gear on the mountain (everything can be hired except for gloves – they can be purchased from the gift shop).
  • Aim to arrive by 10am – at the latest. During busy periods the carpark closes and admit no more visitors onto the mountain. Can you imagine how you (and the kids) would feel if you drove for two hours and were turned away. Ahh!
  • All food and drinks are available at the onsite cafe – however there are undercover picnic tables so bring your own lunch! Make sure you pack some snacks and a drink bottle for the kids to enjoy during the day.
  • Adults can enjoy the many cross-country skiing trails – just buy a ski pass at the information centre on the mountain. Lessons and guided snowshoe tours are available for adults and children.

HIGHLIGHTS

If this video doesn’t make you want to hit the slopes this weekend, then we don’t know what will!

MORE INFORMATION

Car entry prices begin at $56. Prices for larger vehicles, on-mountain gear rental and snow sports can be found here.

Bed wetting and Toilet Training – Travelling Tips for Families

We have spoken to many travelling families about the logistics of toilet training and dealing with bed wetting on the road and whilst it is a very common problem, it can make life difficult!

camping-with-kids
To help you enjoy your time away from home, we have compiled our list of top tips to help you get some shut eye, protect your mattresses and enjoy dry sheets (and kids) in the morning.

Here are our SIX TOP TIPS on staying dry!

Mattress protection

Protect-a-bed caravan 1

There are a variety of pads and covers available to protect your bed and pillow, (and
underwear pads that can be used for one off occasions – e.g. school camps, holidays,
sleepovers) but a good quality mattress protector that doesn’t leak is going to be a sleep (and sanity) saver whilst on the road.

boy-in-caravan 1
We use the Signature® Tencel® Mattress Protector from Protect-A- Bed, which is made from odourless wood-based fibres, stays cool in summer and warm in winter. It is absolutely waterproof (and breathable) and has saved our mattress more than once! What we were impressed with was that the Protect-A- Bed is ideal for people with sensitive skin, rhinitis, or eczema. The range is approved by the National Asthma Council, Australia Sensitive Choice Program and Red Nose (Sids and Kids) as well as the Eczema Association and is Sensitive Skin Tried and Tested. Best of all you can machine wash them and throw them in the dryer.

Making the bed in layers will allow you to pull off the wet sheet / mattress protector
layer (if an accident happens) to reveal a dry, fresh sheet / mattress protector layer so that you can get back to sleep and deal with it in the morning.

Also, just as a side note – if you can’t wash due to your location- there are disposable mattress pads that you can buy to put in the top layer. However, it’s important to have a full length mattress protector on top of the mattress.

If you are wondering why mattress protectors are essential, here are some gross facts about your bed from Protect-A- Bed that will have you buying a mattress protector STAT!

protect-a-bed.jpg

  • Humans sweat up to 1L of body fluid per night and lose millions of skin flakes each night. After 5 years, half the weight of a mattress can be made up of our own body fluids, skin cells, mould and bacteria that seep into our bedding. Pass me a bucket!
  • Dust mites lurk in an unprotected mattress and are a major cause of asthma and allergies. As much as 30% of the population are actually allergic to dust mites – despite their tiny size, dust mites produce 10-20 waste particles per day!

Nappy or Pull-Up’s

baby in nappy

If you are worried about laundry, and you’re only away for a short period then nappies and pull-ups are sanity savers! It is unlikely that a child will become dry wearing these, but they are perfect for hotel stays and accommodation where you don’t have access to washing facilities. A word from the wise, sometimes they leak so pop a mattress protector in your case so you don’t have to explain yourself to the hotel receptionist. Been there, done that!

Staying Hydrated

girl-drinking-2

Drinking plenty of fluid throughout the day is very important for your child, and restricting the amount of fluid your child drinks in the evening is thought to be unhelpful and may even delay the process of being dry at night.

Bedwetting alarms

Bedwetting alarms are a useful and successful way to treat bedwetting, but may take 6 – 8 weeks to work. These alarms are available for hire from the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and other hospitals around Australia. You will need a referral from your GP to see a paediatrician before you can hire a bedwetting alarm.

Medications

Whilst most children with bedwetting do not need to take medication, there are some
occasions when it is recommended. You should talk to your doctor about a treatment plan for your child.

Encouragement and Motivation

It goes without saying that it is very important to be patient and to encourage your child.
Most importantly, punishing or making fun of a child for wetting the bed will only make the situation worse – be sure to explain this to brothers and sisters as well.

Some parents have great success with reward charts, others find it adds stress and causes disappointment to kids who are desperate to be dry and have no control over it. Charts alone have been known to have little success, but in combination with a bedwetting alarm can be useful.

sleeping.jpg

We hope that you find these tips useful. Please make sure that if bedwetting is worrying you or your child then you should seek medical advice and grab yourself a mattress protector from Protect-A- Bed!

Good Luck and Happy Travels x
