Kidding Around … Wombat Bend Playspace

We are lucky enough to know so many people who love Kidding Around Australia as much as we do and over the coming months we will be introducing you to these wonderful parents as they become guest contributors on our site!

Today we would like to introduce you to Kirrilee! Kirrilee has a 3 year old son Thomas and, along with her husband, is expecting her second son in a few short weeks! We are so excited to meet him!

Kirrilee took Thomas to the Wombat Bend Playspace in Templestowe Lower in Victoria recently and it looks like an absolute cracker of a playground!

WBWombat Bend Playspace is located in Finns Reserve and is perfect for creative play! Decorated with community art, Wombat Bend has sensory play activities, accessible path networks, an ampitheatre and native forest walk and is suitable for children of all abilities, aged 1-14 years.

There is lots of space for kids to run around and its completely fenced in! With plenty of different activities like slides, swings, a flying fox, carousel, seesaw, giant sandpit and a maze the kids will be kept entertained for hours.

Wombat Bend Playspace

Mine and Thomas’ favourite was the elevated sandpit with water canals controlled by a tap you turn on to create a water flow that runs down into the big sandpit.

Wombat Bend PlayspaceArt is everywhere with a large mosaic titled ‘The Circle of Friends,’ running feet tiles and the maze panels are fantastic.

Wombat Bend PlayspaceIt had lots of shady areas, toilets, undercover picnic tables and BBQ area. Car parking was not a problem and the only thing I noticed that seemed a miss was a lack of drinking fountains. The one I did find needed maintenance and didn’t work.

Kirrilee Says

It gets hot so remember hats and sunscreen (and a drink bottle)! We really loved it and will definitely return!

KIDDING AROUND AUSTRALIA’S RANDOM ACTS OF KID-NESS

What happens when a local Dad is diagnosed with terminal cancer? The community rallies around and puts on a day to remember!

Justin was diagnosed with melanoma cancer 10 years ago. He has 3 children – Alyssa 15, Nicholas 11 and Sam 6 with his wife Kelly. During this time he continued to work and strive in his career. He tolerated all of the treatments with the strongest attitude. His mantra was “I will not let cancer define me”.
justin
Justin – doing something that he loves!

According to Justin’s mother-in-law, “Justin would always be the first person to raise his hand in support for others in need and has been a long time volunteer to many charities playing with his band ‘Steel Crazy’ or as a duo assisting to raise funds or awareness in a variety of area’s and now he and his family are the ones in desperate need.”

After numerous treatments, Justin was finally thought to be in remission until he found out the cancer had spread to his brain and it was terminal. He and his wife Kelly, who is his rock, sat the three kids down and told them the truth. They have limited time with their Dad so they need to make the most of their time together. They then decided to do a bucket list.

Items on the bucket list included:

  • Go on a road trip around Australia
  • See Ayers rock
  • Swim with the dolphins
  • Go snorkelling on the great barrier reef
  • Take dad to all the theme parks in Queensland
  • Visit Mackay, Cairns and the Whitsundays
  • See all the beautiful scenery Australia has to offer  & to make some beautiful new memories with the kids to last them a lifetime

Kelly put some of the things off the bucket list on Facebook and so began ‘JUSTIN’S DAY’.

Justin’s Day is a chance for the community to come together to assist and show support for a well known and loved family in Seymour, Victoria. The day is being split in two parts –  a Tea Party and a Sunday Funday that will be hosted at The Royal Hotel, Seymour!

Where: The Royal Hotel, 26 Emily Street, Seymour
When: Sunday the 15th of November
Time: 9AM – 11AM
Cost: $35 per adult, $10 per child

What does it involve? A morning tea that consists of a variety of finger food, hot savouries, pastries, desserts, tea/coffee, juice and wine.

Themed as if you have just stepped into an old English tearoom, surrounded by friendly faces and delicious delicacies. There will also be entertainment throughout the morning including some fantastic acoustic performances from locals in the community.

** Bookings are essential **
Please contact the Royal Hotel at (03) 57 921 004 to secure yourself a seat at what is to be a fun filled morning.

SUNDAY FUNDAY
Where: The Royal Hotel, 26 Emily Street, Seymour
When: Sunday the 15th of November
Time: From 12 Noon onwards

This is going to be a fantastic event for a fantastic cause! Come on down and show your support!

Kidding Around Essentials … Dyson V6 Absolute

Okay, so I have a little confession to make! All year, I have been reading reviews from my fellow bloggers who have been lucky enough to review the newest member of the Dyson family – the Dyson V6 Absolute. I was waiting patiently not so patiently for my turn and a little bit of me thought I wouldn’t get the chance… but I should have known better! Good things come to those who wait, and boy, is the Dyson V6 Absolute a good thing!

The Dyson V6 Absolute makes a great selfie stick!
The Dyson V6 Absolute makes a great selfie stick!

I’m not into the nitty gritty of just how everything works – Dyson spend millions of dollars every day in research and development to make sure it just does. It you want all the specs, head HERE and if you want to know what I thought, then read on!

We have definitely put the Dyson V6 Absolute through it’s paces here at the Kidding Around Australia house. It’s cleaned up food, hair, dirt and flower petals! The only time it has faltered was when I tried to pick up a button on carpet (just because I could) and it pushed it rather than sucking it up!

It gives a really deep clean thanks to the cyclone technology that gets out all the underlying dirt that we can’t see, I was impressed and slightly horrified to see just how much was picked up and was there for all to see in the little plastic chamber!
dy1

The Dyson V6 Absolute comes with five different attachment heads and a handy charging dock for keeping everything together (although everything doesn’t fit at the same time so a little basket or something is required to keep everything out of the way)! There are two smaller heads for spot cleaning and two Dyson-engineered cleaner heads for whole house cleans.  It also comes with a mini motorised head. The cleaning heads can be attached directly to the motor for a portable, “dust buster” type cleaner perfect for the car or to the stylish red pole (or wand? I’m not sure of the technical term!) that makes it an awesome cordless upright vacuum cleaner.

Would you like to see it in action? Alegría is destined for a career in film or television – she is a born presenter!

The Dyson V6 Absolute is child’s play to use! All you need to do is hold down the trigger and it’s so simple (and light weighing only 2.2kgs) that Isaac can (and will) do it happily! It has a relatively short battery life (up to 20 minutes total) and this is cut dramatically if you use the extra strength ‘max’ power button.

The Dyson V6 Absolute is easy to clean (although it always makes me laugh – the idea of cleaning my cleaning products!). It’s simple to empty and every part comes apart easily with a flick or push so that you can really get into it if you need to. The washable filter, with HEPA filtration, doesn’t need replacing and leaves behind air that is cleaner than your currently breathing! Bonus!

dyson

After putting it through it’s paces, the Dyson V6 Absolute is a crowd favourite in this house and is definitely worth investing in! In fact, if you would like to try it out (and perhaps come and clean our house) then let me know!

Please note: We were given a Dyson V6 Absolute for the purposes of this review. As always our opinion is honest and our own.

Random Acts of Kid-ness … Wheel of Brisbane

We were so happy to hear about a Home Schooling group in Queensland who enjoy reading our posts! They are always looking for fun and educational things to try so we put our thinking caps on and came up with a Random Acts of Kid-ness that ticks all the boxes.

wheel of bris

We have a great relationship with The Wheel of Brisbane and they have generously given us two Wheel of Brisbane Ambassador Exclusive Cabin Passes for the Home Schooling kids! Not only can the kids have a great time, they can also study engineering, geography and meteorology!

I spoke with one of the parents, Katrina, who said that they all met through Homeschool Facebook Groups, as there are a huge number of groups on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. The children still study all the same areas of the National Curriculum however they can also do external classes such as Art, Drama, Photography, Robotics/ Electronics, and Aboriginal culture from Gold Coast elders in sessions about their Art, culture and land.  There are a variety of reasons parents choose to home school their children. Some have been verbally and physically bullied at school, others have special needs and do not receive the help that they need to fit into and cope in a regular classroom setting, some children do not have special needs but may have some learning difficulties and other children have never been to a traditional school because the parents believe they can provide a better learning environment at home. From my perspective, home schooling my son has made him happier, more confident and independent. He’s thriving.”

The Wheel of Brisbane is recognised as one of the most exciting additions to the Brisbane City Skyline. With breathtaking views across the iconic Brisbane River, this must see attraction provides something for everyone, young or old, tourist or local and is a “must do” for anyone in Brisbane. All gondolas are fully enclosed and air-conditioned and seat up to 6 adults and 2 children in safety and comfort, except for the VIP gondola which seats up to 4 adults.

The Wheel of Brisbane is located in the Parklands at South Bank in the heart of Brisbane’s cultural, lifestyle and entertainment district. Cultural Forecourt, The Parklands, South Bank, Brisbane.

We can’t wait to hear about your experience kids – have a fantastic time!

Kidding Around … Myer Giftorium

Alegría and I were excited to go on a Mummy and Daughter date to the launch of Myer’s Giftorium – which is a wonderful place that has Christmas all wrapped up!

Myer Giftorium 2015

Upon arrival we were given a personalised gift bag – which, much like a kid on Christmas morning, we ripped right in to! In our gift bag we discovered toys, a custom Peanuts licensed print, a monogrammed mug, The Spirit of Christmas CD, Dilmah Tea, a leather pen, Roller Lash, gift vouchers and a personalised jar of Nutella. So. Much. Fun!

Myer giftorium

We were welcomed to the launch by Myer Ambassador Kris Smith who is a self-confessed “Selfie King”. I was happy to take him up on his offer – Alegría, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with him! I apologised and told him not to take it personally … to which he replied “Don’t worry, I have that affect on women”. Yeah, sure you do Kris!

Kris Smith at Myer Giftorium 2015

Exploring the entire 6th floor of Myer Melbourne is a Christmas shoppers dream! There are gifts for everyone catering for every budget, from stocking fillers to music systems and if you don’t know where to start you can book an appointment with Myer’s trained “Gifticians” who will steer you in the right direction!

Myer Giftorium 2015

Personalised gifts are definitely all the rage this festive season with everything from embossed leather goods, to embroidered Santa sacks and stockings, custom Mr Men, Little Miss and Peanuts licensed prints and the hugely popular Nutella jars.

Star Wars is set to be a popular gift choice this year – Alegría and I participated in a Jedi training at the launch, which I am sure will be a hit with the kids whilst Mum and Dad decide on gifts! We bought Isaac a Mr. Potato Head Star Wars toy as a consolation for not coming with us! Star Wars along with Build A Bear Workshops are setting up in-store pop-up shops in every Myer store.

Myer Giftorium 2015

On November 10, Jennifer Hawkins will unveil the 60th season of the Christmas windows display at Myer’s flagship Bourke St store and Santa will take up residence in Santaland. Children can meet him, have a photograph taken and tell him all the goodies on their wish list. As a bonus, there is no more waiting in line with screaming kids! You can get in early and book* your time to meet him, so you can enjoy even more fun at Santaland. The Santaland Express train is only available at Myer Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Height requirements to ride the train safely: minimum 80cm, maximum 122cm. *Photo bookings are only available at Myer Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Hobart.

The Myer Melbourne Giftorium will officially open on November 14 with performances by Dami Im and Hi5. If you are not in Melbourne, don’t worry, the Giftorium experience will be available in all 67 Myer stores nationwide.

Thank you Myer and Kids Business for inviting us – on the way home, Alegría said “I had such a fun day with you Mum. Can we go again one day?”

Competition Time … CATS the Musical, Melbourne

CATS Logo with backgroundDid you know that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS is coming to Australia for a strictly limited season?

Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from 30 October, 2015.

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances.  The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical.  In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years.

CATS is quite simply a phenomenon. Featuring a fantastical oversized set, a superb score, inspired choreography and mischievous costumes. CATS is a brilliant song and dance spectacular not to be missed and because we have two double passes to give away, you won’t have to!

We have 2 Double passes to CATS the Musical on Friday 18th December, 8pm at the Regent Theatre to give away! Tickets are valued at $119.90 per ticket, so $239.80/double pass.

For the past ten years well known and seasoned circus performers Tony Gasser has resided in Gisborne with wife Debbie and 15 year old son Jordan.

They bought their property over twenty years ago and until now Silvers have never performed in Gisborne.

Anna Gasser explains “We bought in Gisborne as it was close to Melbourne airport, the shopkeepers in the then small village were so friendly and after performing in large cities for most of the year, it was a pleasure to be able to drive to the shops without being in peak hour traffic. Yes, the town has grown since those days but we still look forward to coming home for our break each year”

Silvers will bring their entire show to Gisborne including all the International acts like the Highwire, The Globe of Death and the Wheel of Steel.
