Kidding Around Essentials … Dyson AM10 Humidifier Review

humid-bstileLast month, our friends at Dyson sent us a new Dyson AM10 Humidifier so that we could try it out! I have been waiting for someone to get sick so that I could really put it through it’s paces (which sounds terrible … but you and I know that life with kids means that illness is never too far away!!). As we have been relatively healthy, we have been enjoying it for it’s ‘other’ use – a fan! Yes, you read that correctly – not only is it a humidifier, it can also be used as a fan for high-velocity air cooling in summer! It doesn’t oscillate but it’s great on a summer night.

dyson humidifier 2

Before we go into the nitty gritty, some of you may not know what a humidifier is and why you need one. Basically, a humidifier makes humid air – it puts moisture back into the air we breathe. Our home and work environments are so climate controlled with the use of heaters/air conditioners that our air tends to get dry which can cause dry skin/lips, respiratory discomfort, dry sinuses, nose bleeds, and other health issues. I’m not a health professional, so please do your own research, but it is my experience that humidifiers can help soothe or prevent these concerns and help ease the symptoms of a cold and other respiratory conditions (if you have allergies or asthma, talk to your doctor before using a humidifier).

As you will be aware if you follow us on social media (and you should by the way!), Alegría had her tonsils out last week. Poor little thing. I remember VIVIDLY the pain involved.

dyson humidifier 4.jpg

Tim was talking to his mate at work (who recently had his tonsils out) and he suggested that sleeping with a humidifier helped him. He said he was waking with a dry, sore throat – and whilst it is still going to be sore we thought maybe it wouldn’t be AS sore. So, this was our chance to see how easy the Dyson AM10 Humidifier would be to use!

dyson humidifier 5

We all know that Dyson invest MILLIONS of dollars into research and development so whilst there are other cheaper humidifiers on the market the Dyson AM10 humidifier is top notch!

The Dyson humidifier uses Air Multiplier™ technology to project hygienic, humidified air quickly and quietly. It can disperse mist evenly throughout a 16m2 room so it had no problem in Alegría’s bedroom.

Dyson-Air-Multiplier

We have used other humidifiers and vapourisers in the past with success but I was always concerned about mold and bacteria growing in the water compartment. Before releasing any mist, Dyson’s Ultraviolet Cleanse technology uses a three-minute cycle to kill 99.9%
of bacteria in the tank of water. Every drop of water is exposed to an ultraviolet light and then atomized by a piezo (whatever that is!). This ensures that any mist projected is  always 99.9% bacteria-free.

The Dyson humidifier measures temperature and humidity and adjusts accordingly to create a comfortable environment. This means that there’s no over humidification (which means no condensation forming on the walls and windows – thank goodness). You can manually change the settings but we used the AUTO mode so that the machine could do it’s thing!

dyson humidifier 1

The Dyson humidifier is controlled by a remote control with 10 precise airflow settings and is magnetised to stay on the unit – a great feature of all Dyson fans / humidifiers. The accurate humidistat and efficient water management system means the humidifier can be used continuously for up to 18 hours using one 3 litre tank of water and there’s a built-in sleep timer for automatic turn off.

dyson humidifier 3

It’s easy to use and the important parts are detachable. The water tank is see-through so you know when to refill through the twistable valve (that seals water tightly), it has a strong handle  and it all snaps back easily into the unit. It is recommended on the guide to clean the parts with a citric acid solution – I often wonder how important these things are … because it’s not very high on my priority list!

We found it very safe for kids (the unit doesn’t get hot and the steam is quite cool) and the only thing we would change is that we would add oscillation to the fan. It is bulky which makes storage tricky and you definitely wouldn’t pack it to travel (except in a caravan … I’d find a spot for it if we had a caravan!).

Overall, we love it. I can’t tell you definitively if it helped with Alegría’s tonsillectomy pain as she can’t really tell us (even if the pain was lessoned, then it’s still pain to her) – but if “Old Mate” at Tim’s work is to be believed he reckons it does! I definitely won’t hesitate in using the Dyson Humidifier if anyone gets a cold or is chesty in the future!

Kidding Around … Ned Kelly’s Birthplace, Beveridge, Victoria

Anyone who has travelled between Melbourne and Seymour on the Hume Highway, has undoubtedly driven past the small town of Beveridge, Victoria. Beveridge is a small country town 42 kilometres North of Melbourne at the Southern end of Mitchell Shire and is famous for being the birthplace of bushranger Edward “Ned” Kelly. Ned was born in Beveridge in December 1854 and lived there for 9 years before moving with his family to Avenel. By the time they left Beveridge, there were six Kelly children with another on the way – wouldn’t that have been a fun road trip!

We decided to take a small tour around the Ned’s home town to see what was left of Australia’s most infamous bushrangers’ early life.

Our first stop was Ned’s boyhood home of 4 years (from approximately 5 – 9 years of age) on the corner of Kelly St and Stewart St that was built by his father John “Red” Kelly in 1859.

ned 2
Ned Kelly’s boyhood home. A house built by his father John “Red” Kelly in Beveridge.

The house is surrounded by a wire security fence and has a printed sign out the front that gives a short description of his life. Tim and the kids didn’t get out of the car and I walked around to take a few photos. It is so disappointing that the house has been not been maintained and essentially has been left to rot even though it was added to the Victorian Register of Historic Buildings in September, 1992. It is falling down in places and is definitely not safe to explore!

I stood there wondering what life would have been like in the 1800’s, and used our outing as a way to begin teaching Australian history to Alegría. We discussed who Ned Kelly was and he had lots of questions about the types of toys Ned would have had, as well as his siblings, bed, plates, cutlery and pets. Alegría was perplexed as to why “a bad guy would be so famous and make history?” Tim and I weren’t too sure how to answer that one! Out of the mouths of babes …

ned 3 ned 4If the house was restored and open to the public on weekends, I am sure it would be a popular tourist attraction. I can just imagine them selling walking tour maps, souvenirs and perhaps light refreshments.

We then drove to the former St John’s Catholic Church in Spring Street, but the church gate was locked so we couldn’t walk around and take a look. Ned and siblings attended Beveridge Catholic School, which was run out of the Gothic bluestone church. To our knowledge, the church is not open to the public – which is a shame.

ned 5

You would think by now we would be feeling dejected, and to a certain degree we were. Tim and the kids had not been out of the car and I just wanted to jump the fence and have a look (please don’t call the police, I didn’t!!) so we pressed on to our last destination, the Hunters Tryst. We are so glad we did!

ned 6

The Hunters Tryst is worth visiting (even if you are not doing the Kidding Around Australia Ned Kelly tour!) and dates back to 1845. It was built by Andrew Beveridge and it has been said that Ned’s father Red used to drink in the bar (which is now the dining room).

The Hunters Tryst has been enlarged over the years and features the dining room (the meals are super yummy!) and a large bar area with two pool tables.  The post office is also located in this building. Ned Kelly memorabilia lines the walls and the Hunters Tryst oozes rustic charm with good ol’ country hospitality! If you want to stay the night, the adjoining hotel also has accommodation, a rose garden and large balcony beer garden.

ned 7

The Hunter’s Tryst is located at 5/9 Old Hume Highway, Beveridge, Victoria and are open for Lunch from 12 to 2pm and Dinner from 6pm to 8.30. For more information you can visit their Website, call them on (03) 9745 2422 or find them on Facebook.

If you would like to follow in our footsteps, here is a map we prepared for you! Enjoy!

Kidding Around… Disney’s Frozen Summer Garden Party

I don’t have to tell you how excited Alegría was to be invited to Disney’s Frozen Summer Garden Party!

Disney Frozen 3

The party was held at Rippon Lea Estate, and was very impressive (as you would expect from a Disney event) and the attention to detail was amazing!

Disney Frozen 1

Ricki-Lee sang a medley of Disney songs which will be showcased in the upcoming Disney Under The Stars shows. The shows will feature hits from Frozen, The Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins and will be held ‘On The Steps’ of the Sydney Opera House, the banks of the Brisbane River and Melbourne’s magnificent Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

disney frozen 10.jpg

There were so many activities available during the day that included a delicious picnic, face painting, boat rides, lawn games and ice cream!

disney frozen 6disney frozen 7Disney Frozen 4disney frozen 8

Of course, no Frozen party would be without a meet and greet with Elsa, Anna and Kristoff!

disney frozen 5

At the end of the party, we were given a beautiful snowflake necklace from Disney Couture! Thank you to Disney for putting on the Frozen Summer Garden Party –  we loved it!

disney frozen 11

Although we were guests of Disney, this event was for competition winners. I highly recommend keeping your eye out for future competitions because this was an afternoon we will never forget!

Kidding Around Essentials … PeriCoach

This is a sponsored post

We mentioned PeriCoach and #kegelface and on our social media a few times last year and were amazed by the response we got and how much bladder weakness affects some of our readers. There were posts on our Facebook wall, comments on Instagram and personal emails thanking us for helping to raise awareness.

The truth is, we are passionate about inspiring mothers to go Kidding Around with their families and if you have weak pelvic floor muscles then you can never really relax and enjoy the moment. And let’s face it, we have enough to worry about without worrying about our bodies!

So that is why we wanted to share Women’s Health physiotherapist, Annette Innes’ TOP 5 TIPS for strengthening pelvic floor muscles in the hope that some or all of these techniques will be helpful to you or someone you love!

Annette Innes (1)

1) Ensure you are doing a correct and optimal exercise technique. If you are unsure, see a Continence and Women’s Health Physiotherapist; locate the nearest to you via the link below https://www.physiotherapy.asn.au/APAWCM/Controls/FindAPhysio.aspx.

2) Try the ‘Stop the Flow” test. Stop the flow of urine midstream but NOT first thing in the morning when you have a full bladder and strong flow, only once per wee, and make sure you can start again to finish passing your urine. This is only a test, and should not be done more than once per week. It is not always an indication of your pelvic floor muscle strength, but provides awareness of the muscles for some people.

3) Set aside some time each day for pelvic floor exercises. You will need to focus to do a correct contraction at first, so traffic lights may not be safe! Some women do their exercises at a toilet stop after a wee – when wiping, while sitting, while standing, and walking to wash their hands. Those who persist are those who will succeed!

4) Don’t try too hard. It is important to localise your exercise to the muscles around your vagina and urethra. Your neck, eyebrows, chest and upper abdominals are not attached to the pelvic floor and will waste your valuable energy – keep breathing!

5) Try a home biofeedback device. This can be used for self-assessment and motivation; PeriCoach* was developed in consultation with healthcare professionals: www.pericoach.com.

The PeriCoach System®

As I said, some of my friends have issues with their pelvic floor and it concerns me that many Australian’s who have urinary symptoms do not seek advice and treatment for their problem. There is help available – speak to your GP or Physiotherapist!

It might be uncomfortable to talk about in the beginning, however, my hope is that we can raise awareness and start the conversation.

Kidding Around … with Cobs Popcorn

Remember when we introduced you to Cobsmacking popcorn manufacturer Cobs Popcorn? They generously donated a hamper worth $100 filled to the brim of assorted Cobs Popcorn flavours for our Random Acts of Kid-ness benefiting Justin and his family.

The benefit raised more than $23,000 on the day and we were happy to be involved in a small but meaningful way.

cobs-logo

Cobs Popcorn is Australian made using only natural ingredients, no additives, colours or preservatives and is produced in a nut-free factory. There are organic options available as well so it makes the perfect guilt free snack for everyone in the family!

cobs-naturals-lineup

Cobs Popcorn comes in 11 flavours, in 3 ranges: Organic – Lightly Salted, Slightly Sweet and Sea Salt ; Natural – Lightly Salted, Slightly Sweet, Sea Salt, Cheddar Cheese, Butter, Coco Crunch, Nacho Cheese, Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar and Aged White Cheddar ; Favourites – Caramel, Dark Chocolate Caramel and Milk Chocolate Caramel.

Our favourite is Lightly Salted, Slightly Sweet, closely followed by the classic Butter flavor.

I was surprised that the Coco Crunch flavour wasn’t a bigger hit with the kids, Nacho Cheese has a spicy kick to it and no-one (except Isaac, on occasion) particularly liked the Sea Salt & Vinegar flavour.

The ‘Favourites’ range is perfect for eating as is for a sweet snack or for making a drool-worthy desert.

zumbo2

Recently, we attended the Kids Business Bloggers Brunch and met one of Australia’s most celebrated patissiers, Adriano Zumbo who made two delicious deserts using Cobs Popcorn! He has inspired me to create a popcorn sensation … stay tuned, my recipe will POP up on the blog soon!

zumbo

We have spoken to the lovely people at Cobs Popcorn because we wanted one of you to be able to experience this Cobsmacking flavour sensation! They have generously given us a $100 worth of popcorn to give away to one of our lucky readers!

Kidding Around at … Wind in the Willows by the Australian Shakespeare Company

3140-Willows-Banner-Image-website.png

Wind in the Willows is TOADally awesome!

We were invited to join Mr. Toad, Ratty, Weasel, Mole, Badger, Otter, Portly, Polly and the Head Chief Rabbit at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne to watch them bring to life Kenneth Grahame’s famous tale about life on the riverbank. Amazingly, this year Wind in the Willows is celebrating 29 years in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and 15 years in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney!

For over 90 minutes, we were entertained by all of the classic characters who were introduced by the narrator, Head Chief Rabbit. The children (and let’s face it, most parents) were transformed into rabbits by the Head Chief Rabbit with a waggle of the ears and a wiggle of the nose!

IMG_3484

All of the young ‘rabbits’ were encouraged to get involved and become part of the adventure where we (oops, I mean THEY) sang out loud, ran through the gardens, screamed and laughed hysterically!

Don’t forget to pack a picnic full of yummy goodies, a rug to sit on, a hat, insect repellent and some sunscreen. The production moves location half way through so make sure you are ready to fold up your picnic rug, grab your stuff and go for a little stroll to the next set.

The kids loved the Head Chief Rabbit (played by Roscoe Mathers) and by far the most entertaining for me was the Weasel (played by Cheltenham local Paul Morris). He has shades of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and rumour has it that whilst I was away from my picnic rug with the children (I won’t tell you why) he helped himself to my popcorn!

IMG_3506a
Paul Morris is fantastic as Weasel!

We LOVED the show. Seriously, there is something for everyBUNNY (see what I did there?) to enjoy. Everyone from 4-84 will be have a laugh at one of the jokes and thoroughly enjoy being whisked away to the world of Wind in the Willows. This is interactive theatre at it’s best and you and your family will be talking about it for a long time!

So, HOP TO IT, book your tickets and don’t forget to get a photo with the cast after the show!
