Last month, our friends at Dyson sent us a new Dyson AM10 Humidifier so that we could try it out! I have been waiting for someone to get sick so that I could really put it through it’s paces (which sounds terrible … but you and I know that life with kids means that illness is never too far away!!). As we have been relatively healthy, we have been enjoying it for it’s ‘other’ use – a fan! Yes, you read that correctly – not only is it a humidifier, it can also be used as a fan for high-velocity air cooling in summer! It doesn’t oscillate but it’s great on a summer night.
Before we go into the nitty gritty, some of you may not know what a humidifier is and why you need one. Basically, a humidifier makes humid air – it puts moisture back into the air we breathe. Our home and work environments are so climate controlled with the use of heaters/air conditioners that our air tends to get dry which can cause dry skin/lips, respiratory discomfort, dry sinuses, nose bleeds, and other health issues. I’m not a health professional, so please do your own research, but it is my experience that humidifiers can help soothe or prevent these concerns and help ease the symptoms of a cold and other respiratory conditions (if you have allergies or asthma, talk to your doctor before using a humidifier).
As you will be aware if you follow us on social media (and you should by the way!), Alegría had her tonsils out last week. Poor little thing. I remember VIVIDLY the pain involved.
Tim was talking to his mate at work (who recently had his tonsils out) and he suggested that sleeping with a humidifier helped him. He said he was waking with a dry, sore throat – and whilst it is still going to be sore we thought maybe it wouldn’t be AS sore. So, this was our chance to see how easy the Dyson AM10 Humidifier would be to use!
We all know that Dyson invest MILLIONS of dollars into research and development so whilst there are other cheaper humidifiers on the market the Dyson AM10 humidifier is top notch!
The Dyson humidifier uses Air Multiplier™ technology to project hygienic, humidified air quickly and quietly. It can disperse mist evenly throughout a 16m2 room so it had no problem in Alegría’s bedroom.
We have used other humidifiers and vapourisers in the past with success but I was always concerned about mold and bacteria growing in the water compartment. Before releasing any mist, Dyson’s Ultraviolet Cleanse technology uses a three-minute cycle to kill 99.9%
of bacteria in the tank of water. Every drop of water is exposed to an ultraviolet light and then atomized by a piezo (whatever that is!). This ensures that any mist projected is always 99.9% bacteria-free.
The Dyson humidifier measures temperature and humidity and adjusts accordingly to create a comfortable environment. This means that there’s no over humidification (which means no condensation forming on the walls and windows – thank goodness). You can manually change the settings but we used the AUTO mode so that the machine could do it’s thing!
The Dyson humidifier is controlled by a remote control with 10 precise airflow settings and is magnetised to stay on the unit – a great feature of all Dyson fans / humidifiers. The accurate humidistat and efficient water management system means the humidifier can be used continuously for up to 18 hours using one 3 litre tank of water and there’s a built-in sleep timer for automatic turn off.
It’s easy to use and the important parts are detachable. The water tank is see-through so you know when to refill through the twistable valve (that seals water tightly), it has a strong handle and it all snaps back easily into the unit. It is recommended on the guide to clean the parts with a citric acid solution – I often wonder how important these things are … because it’s not very high on my priority list!
We found it very safe for kids (the unit doesn’t get hot and the steam is quite cool) and the only thing we would change is that we would add oscillation to the fan. It is bulky which makes storage tricky and you definitely wouldn’t pack it to travel (except in a caravan … I’d find a spot for it if we had a caravan!).
Overall, we love it. I can’t tell you definitively if it helped with Alegría’s tonsillectomy pain as she can’t really tell us (even if the pain was lessoned, then it’s still pain to her) – but if “Old Mate” at Tim’s work is to be believed he reckons it does! I definitely won’t hesitate in using the Dyson Humidifier if anyone gets a cold or is chesty in the future!
